Background
editThe Conservatives went into the election defending a large majority won in 1990. However, that majority had been reduced by two when the Liberal Democrats gained Chelsfield & Goddington in the 1993 by-election.
Election result
editThe turnout across the borough was 48.1%, the second highest turn out in the council's history.
