On November 17, 2017, Atlanta United announced the launch of a reserve team, Atlanta United 2, to play in what is currently named the USL Championship at the start of the 2018 season.[1]

With a win over Chicago Fire on October 21, Atlanta qualified for the 2019 CONCACAF Champions League by having the best aggregate record across the 2017 and 2018 MLS seasons.[2] The club later qualified for the competition by winning MLS Cup 2018, so their previously-held spot was allocated to the team with the second best aggregate record, New York Red Bulls.

26 FW   Jon Gallagher   Atlanta United 2 August 19, 2018 October 13, 2018 [7]

Due to a surplus of players under contract that required an International Roster Slot, Oliver Shannon was loaned to Atlanta United 2 for the full 2018 season. In addition, as part of Eric Remedi's incoming transfer, José Hernández was officially loaned to Atlanta United 2. Neither player could be recalled to the first team without an additional corresponding roster transaction. Players on the first team roster were able play for the second team without restriction.

On August 19, Hernández was in the matchday squad for the first team's match against the Columbus Crew. In order for this to be in compliance with league roster rules, Atlanta had to send forward Jon Gallagher on loan to Atlanta United 2 for the rest of the season and recall Hernández from the second team.[7]

  1. ^ a b c On June 17, 2017 Atlanta United academy players Patrick Okonkwo, George Bello, and Lagos Kunga signed Homegrown Player (HGP) contracts with the senior team, to be effective as of January 1, 2018.
  2. ^ a b Portland Timbers traded Darlington Nagbe and Gbenga Arokoyo to Atlanta in exchange for $650K in GAM in 2018, $100K in GAM in 2019, $300K in TAM and a 2018 international roster slot.[13] Arokoyo was never on the club's official roster and later signed for Kalmar FF.[14]
  3. ^ a b c Later retired from professional soccer.
  4. ^ a b Following Atlanta United declining contract options on both players, the club traded the rights to Kenwyne Jones and Alexandros Tabakis along with their natural fourth round pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft to Sporting Kansas City in exchange for the rights to Kévin Oliveira and Tyler Pasher as well as Sporting Kansas City's natural second round pick in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft. Sporting Kansas City had declined contract options on Oliveira and Pasher on November 27, 2017.[23][24] Neither player was ever on Atlanta's official roster. Oliveira and Pasher later signed with Ottawa Fury and Indy Eleven, respectively.[25][26] Jones had already retired at the time of the transaction, and Tabakis later signed with North Carolina FC.[27]
  5. ^ After Atlanta United declined Mears' contract option, he was selected by Minnesota United FC in the 2017 MLS Re-Entry Draft.[28]
