Ahmed Haitham is a former Member of Parliament (MP) representing the South Machangolhi constituency in People's Majlis of the Maldives.[1] He was elected in 2019, serving until 2023 when he resigned from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) due to internal party disputes.[2][3][4][5] Haitham was known for his active role in social justice, child welfare, and health-related issues during his tenure.[6][7] One of his most notable actions was summoning the Minister of Health to Parliament regarding corruption related to ventilator procurement during the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to significant media attention and the minister’s eventual removal from office.[8][9][10][11][12][13]

During his time in Parliament, Haitham was a member of several key committees[14], including those related to national security, health, and foreign relations.[15] He also submitted motions and petitions advocating for the welfare of vulnerable groups, such as tourism industry workers during the pandemic[16] and the enhancement of drug rehabilitation facilities in the country.[17]
In September 2023, amidst political pressures and threats to his safety, Haitham left the ruling MDP and became a member of the opposition. Despite facing multiple threats and challenges, including harassment directed at his family, Haitham continued to speak out on issues of national importance.[18][failed verification]
