Mario & Luigi: Brothership[a] is an upcoming role-playing video game published by Nintendo and the sixth main installment in the Mario & Luigi series. It will be the first original entry in the series since Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (2015), the first that is not developed by AlphaDream after its closure due to bankruptcy in October 2019, the first that features fully 3D gameplay, and the first for a home console.[b] The game was announced in a Nintendo Direct on June 18, 2024, and is scheduled for release on the Nintendo Switch on November 7, 2024.

Gameplay

edit

Following a similar gameplay style of the previous games, Brothership features advanced jump and hammer attacks utilizing both brothers at the same time as well as brand new and returning Bros. Attacks.[2]

Setting

edit

The game takes place on the sea of the world of Concordia and its islands, which Mario and Luigi traverse on Shipshape Island, a structure that is described as "part ship, part island."[3]

Development

edit

After series creator AlphaDream filed for bankruptcy in 2019, Nintendo filed a new trademark for Mario & Luigi in January 2020.[4] In June 2024, following the reveal of the game in a Nintendo Direct, Nintendo noted that "some of the original developers" from the franchise are involved in the development of Brothership, but did not reveal what studio was producing the game.[5] The game is currently scheduled for release on the Nintendo Switch on November 7, 2024.[6][7]
