College Estate covers 1.35 km2 (0.52 sq mi)[1] and had an estimated population of 1,370 as of June 2024,[2] with a population density of 1,015 people per km2.

College Estate had a population of 1,284 at the 2018 New Zealand census, an increase of 141 people (12.3%) since the 2013 census, and an increase of 168 people (15.1%) since the 2006 census. There were 474 households, comprising 609 males and 675 females, giving a sex ratio of 0.9 males per female. The median age was 39.3 years (compared with 37.4 years nationally), with 264 people (20.6%) aged under 15 years, 267 (20.8%) aged 15 to 29, 489 (38.1%) aged 30 to 64, and 264 (20.6%) aged 65 or older.

Ethnicities were 82.0% European/Pākehā, 19.2% Māori, 2.1% Pacific peoples, 8.6% Asian, and 2.1% other ethnicities. People may identify with more than one ethnicity.

The percentage of people born overseas was 15.9, compared with 27.1% nationally.

Although some people chose not to answer the census's question about religious affiliation, 50.0% had no religion, 36.9% were Christian, 2.3% had Māori religious beliefs, 0.2% were Hindu, 0.2% were Muslim, 0.9% were Buddhist and 1.2% had other religions.

Of those at least 15 years old, 165 (16.2%) people had a bachelor's or higher degree, and 207 (20.3%) people had no formal qualifications. The median income was $23,100, compared with $31,800 nationally. 111 people (10.9%) earned over $70,000 compared to 17.2% nationally. The employment status of those at least 15 was that 372 (36.5%) people were employed full-time, 165 (16.2%) were part-time, and 42 (4.1%) were unemployed.[3]

Carlton School is a co-educational state primary school for Year 1 to 6 students,[4] with a roll of 289 as of August 2024.[5]

Whanganui Intermediate is a co-educational state intermediate school,[6][7] with a roll of 515.[8]

Whanganui High School is a co-educational state secondary school,[9][10] with a roll of 1387.[11]

Whanganui City College is another co-educational state secondary school,[12][13] with a roll of 284.[14]
