Background and composition
edit"Dilemma" was announced on December 4 on the band's social media accounts, revealing the song's release date as the 7th.[3]
"Dilemma" has been described musically as punk rock, pop-punk and power pop.[4][5][6]
Billie Joe Armstrong stated the meaning of the song "was one of those songs that was kind of easy to write because it was so personal to me. We've seen so many of our peers struggle with addiction and mental illness. This song is all about the pain that comes from those experiences."[7][8][9][10]
Music video
editThe music video for the song, which was released on the same date as the single, begins in black and white and ends in color and features Billie Joe Armstrong drinking heavily at a show.[11] It was shot at Alex's Bar in Long Beach, California.[12] It was directed by Ryan Baxley.
Live performances
editGreen Day played the live debut of "Dilemma" during their performance as part of the 2024 edition of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve.[13] The band then performed an acoustic version of "Dilemma" on January 16, 2024 in a New York City subway station with Jimmy Fallon, as part of a segment for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon; while the performance did not air, it was uploaded to the show's YouTube channel on January 18.[14][15] The song was included in the setlist of their January 18, 2024 show at Irving Plaza, as part of the Small Stages Series by Sirius XM.[16] On April 3, 2024, the band played the song at the Fillmore during a charity concert for the United Nations Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Alliance.[17]
"Dilemma" is included in the setlist of the Saviors Tour, the ongoing concert tour in support of Saviors which began on May 30, 2024.[18] On July 26, 2024, the band played "Dilemma" during their appearance on Good Morning America's televised "Summer Concert Series".[19] The band also played the song during their appearance on the American Music Awards 50th Anniversary Special on October 6, 2024.[20]
