History
editIn April 2023, the Government of Western Australia approached the City of Perth to use two-thirds of its Queens Gardens carpark in Nelson Crescent, East Perth for a new primary school.[1]
Under the Chevron-Hilton Hotel Act 1960, which was enacted in the lead up to the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, was to allow for the demolishment of residential properties for the construction of a 900-bay car park,[1] however, today the land next to Queens Gardens and the WACA Ground can only be used for car parking, due to the act legally barring the land to be developed further.[1] The government proposed to repeal the act.[1]
Despite initially supporting the plan, the City of Perth withdrew its support, with Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas stating it should receive more than the State Government's offer of $4.2 million in compensation to make up for lost parking revenue.[3] It was reported that providing the State Government with the land would cost the City between $29 and $104 million over 30 years, due to the forgone revenue from the car park.[4]
After a year of negotiation, in August 2024 the government announced that it would introduce legislation to compulsorily acquire the land.[2][5] The school is planned to open in 2029,[6] and is set to cost $150 million.[2]
