The Festival Anima, or International Animation Film Festival of Brussels, has been created in 1982 by Philippe Allard, Philippe Moins et André Pint as part of the organisation "Confédération Parascolaire", takes place every year in February and March.

The festival had various names throughout its history, such as "Encounters of the animation cinema", "Week of the cartoon film", "Festival of animated drawings and of animation film".

Principles

edit

Since 2000, Anima hosts an international and a national competition. It participates at the selection of the "European Golden Cartoon", a European animation short movie prize awarded by the main animation film festivals, and is habilitated to propose short movies to the Academy Awards in the animation category.

Every year, the festival proposes retrospectives and hommages, and invites on average 60 to 70 directors and other animation film professionals.

Anima includes workshops, master classes and conference for young professionals (Futuranima).

There are over 30.000 participants to the festival taking place in Brussels (Flagey, a building originally hosting the French-speaking public broadcasting service), but also in Charleroi, Mons, Liège, Ghent, and other cities in Belgium.

In 2018, the festival hosts a master class by Michael Dudok de Wit, director of The Red Turtle.

History

edit

The festival has been created in 1982 under the name of "Encounters of animation film" by Philippe Allard, Philippe Moins et André Pint within the organisation "Confédération parascolaire".

In 1985, it becomes the "Week of the cartoon" ("dessein animé") with the arrival of Doris Cleven.

In 1988, it takes the name of "Festival of cartoon and animated film of Brussels" under the umbrella of the non-profit organization "Folioscope", created by Pilippe Moins and Doris Cleven. The aim of the organization is the promotion of quality animation movies. It has been recognised by the French-speaking and Flemish language communities of Belgium.

In 2004, it is renamed as "Festival Anima".

Until 2014, the direction of the festival is exercised by Doris Cleven et Philippe Moins[1]. Since 2015, Doris Cleven is directing the festival alone and Philippe Moins retains the status of "advising artist". In june 2020, she leaves the direction to Dominique Seutin and Karin Vandenrydt.[2]
