editIn an alternate history, Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov lands on the moon in June 1969 before the Americans. This triggers a race between the powers with the US accelerating its moon landing program. Apollo 10 astronaut Edward Baldwin criticizes NASA's sluggishness, gets removed from flight duty, but later reinstated for Apollo 15 by Deke Slayton. NASA finds water on the moon, intensifying plans for a lunar base. Apollo 15 takes a risk and changes its landing site, finding ice essential for lunar colonization. By August 24, 1974, Jamestown Base is established on the moon.
After a component failure causing an accident, the Apollo 24 relief mission continually faces delays. Gordo Stevens and Danielle Poole, stationed at Jamestown, experience psychological issues and physical injuries due to isolation, they return to Earth. Meanwhile, the Soviets establish a moon base, Zvezda, near Jamestown, escalating tensions. Apollo 24 faces a technical failure which incinerates astronaut Harrison Liu and sends Molly adrift, creating a course change launching the spacecraft into deep space. The American and Soviet tensions intensify on Earth and the moon. In 1983, the US further aims for lunar colonization by launching a plutonium payload for expansion of the Jamestown colony.
