The prison system implemented in Britain was introduced to its colonies from 1844. Accordingly, the prison system began in Sri Lanka by Act No. 18 of 1844. The then Inspector General of Police, Sir George William Robert Campbell, had to supervise and control all prisons under the auspices of the Police Department. In 1905, the Prisons Department became a separate department from the Police Department, and Major Albert de Wilton, who was then the Inspector General of Police, was appointed as the Inspector General of Prisons. There are two plaques on the walls of Wards C and D of the Galle Prison, which can still be seen as evidence that the Galle Prison was also established during this period. However, there is evidence that there was a tunnel from the Dutch fort in Galle to the Galle Prison, and the tunnel entrance inside the Galle Prison is sealed with concrete. Accordingly, the history of the Galle Prison dates back to the Dutch era.
