Windser in 2024

Jordan Andrew Topf (born October 5, 1990),[1] known professionally as Windser, is an American singer-songwriter and producer from Santa Cruz, California.[2] He is best known for his emotive, indie-rock sound and collaborations with artists such as Macklemore.[3][4][5]

Early life and education

edit

Topf grew up in Santa Cruz, California,[6] where he picked up the guitar at the age of eight after his father introduced him to a documentary of Jimi Hendrix performing at Woodstock.[7] Topf later moved to New York City to study music production at The City College of New York.[8] During this time, he formed the band Mainland and recorded their first demos in the college's studios.[9]

Career

edit

Mainland

edit

In 2013, Topf recorded the Shiner (EP) with Jim Eno of Spoon,[10] leading Mainland to sign with 300 Entertainment.[11] The band recorded at Sound City Studios and released the Outcast (EP), followed by several singles and EPs.[12] Mainland disbanded in 2019,[13] prompting Topf to focus on songwriting and production.

Solo as Windser

edit

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Topf retreated to a cabin in Northern California, where he began recording songs for his solo project under the moniker Windser.[14][15][16] His debut single, "July", was released on July 31, 2020.[17][18]

Topf gained further attention through his collaboration with Macklemore on the 2021 single, "Next Year", after Macklemore heard a vocal demo.[19] The two performed the track, along with Ryan Lewis, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[20] as well as Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve.[21]

Notable releases

edit

Following his collaboration with Macklemore, Topf released his next single, "Memory", produced by Jackson Phillips (Day Wave). The song, written about the loss of a childhood friend, received regular airplay on SiriusXM's Alt Nation.[22] The track went on to spend eleven consecutive weeks (and twelve in total) on that chart, ultimately peaking at No. 5 and subsequently peaked at No. 33 on Alternative Radio.[23] Topf followed the success of "Memory" with tours supporting Alt-J,[24] Portugal. The Man,[25] and Cannons.[26]

In 2022, Topf collaborated again with Macklemore on the single, "Maniac", from Macklemore's third solo album Ben. The duo performed the track on Jimmy Kimmel Live! [27] and KEXP[28].

On October 28, 2022, he released his debut EP, Where the Redwoods Meet the Sea, via Bright Antenna Records.[29]
