Marc-André Teruel (b. October 16, 2002), sometimes simply known as Marc André (stylised in all caps),[b] is a French–Austrian double bassist. He is recognised as one of the most promising double bassists of his time and has received numerous awards and compliments from many, such as Michael Bladerer (CEO of the Vienna Philharmonic), the jury of the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA), and Résonances Lyriques (critics of opera and classical music).
Biography
editMarc-André Teruel was born and raised in Vienna. Initially at the age of 4, he started playing the violin, born in a family of musicians. However, he felt that the size wasn't sufficient and switched to the cello at 5 years old and finally the double bass at the age of 10.[3] He began studying it under Josef Niederhammer and Werner Fleischmann at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna at 14 years old.[1]
At just 19 years old, he won in the prestigious Swiss competition Rahn Musikpreis, a competition for young musicians founded in 1976. He is also a winner of the Anton Bruckner First Prize in Austria, prizes from the Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf Competition in Slovakia, and the Angelika Prokopp Summer Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic.[2]
In 2023, he received the then-newly launched Classeek Award for young musicians from the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA), which conducted an interview with the double bassist.[3]
As of 2024, Teruel plays a double bass made by Johann Martin Stoßin Vienna, 1827. It is provided to him by a private sponsor from Austria. Teruel feels that his double bass "has a very strong character, very extroverted", but is "rather stubborn and does not let itself be done".[3]
