The Monterrey Kings are a future professional indoor football team based in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. They were announced as an expansion team and one of the inaugural teams for the new Arena Football One, but will begin play in 2026.

History

edit

The Kings are the second official team to play in the arena football system that is based in Monterrey. The first team was the Monterrey Steel of the National Arena League, who played in their inaugural and lone season in 2017.

Birth of the Kings and hiatus

edit

On September 12, 2024, Arena Football One announced the addition of the Monterrey Kings as their newest expansion team and the first international team to join the AF1. The team ownership is led by former Monterrey Steel owner Fernando Von Rossum, who also did NFL broadcasts in Latin America and with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the Latinamerica Network.[1][2] They are also the third international team to play in the arena system since the Toronto Phantoms of the original Arena Football League and the NAL's Steel.

On November 18, 2024, the AF1 league announced that the Kings and Stockton Crusaders will sit out the 2025 season and debut in 2026.[3][4] Originally signed players Kory Curtis, Amos Coleman and Ezrah Thibodeaux were released by the team to explore other options.[5]
