Patrick Milling-Smith is an English-American Tony Award-winning commercial, theatre, and film producer and founder of Emmy Award-winning production company SMUGGLER.[1]
Biography
editEarly career
editMilling-Smith started his career in London as a production assistant for author and advertising creative director Paul Arden. He produced commercials for several years before moving to the United States and starting a production company.[2][3]
Theatre
editIn 2011, Milling-Smith produced a Broadway musical adaptation of the movie Once, written by Enda Walsh and directed by John Carney. The Broadway adaptation premiered at the New York Theatre Workshop before debuting on Broadway in 2012.[4][5][6]
Milling-Smith produced the musical with Barbara Broccoli, Michael G. Wilson, John Hart, and Brian Carmody. Once. In 2017, Milling-Smith produced the stage adaptation of Robert Evans' biography The Kid Stays In The Picture, directed by Simon McBurney and performed at the Royal Court Theatre in London.
In addition, Milling-Smith produced another musical stage adaptation of a John Carney film, Sing Street. It premiered at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2019 and was scheduled to make a Broadway debut in 2020 at the Lyceum Theater, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[7][2][8]
Film
editIn 2017, Milling-Smith served as an executive producer on Weightless, a New York Times Critics pick.[9][10] He also produced the documentary Holy Wars (2010) and the feature film Greetings From Tim Buckley (2012).[11] Later in 2019, he executive produced Lionsgate's Semper Fi, directed by Henry-Alex Rubin, starring Nat Wolff and Finn Wittrock.[12][13]
In 2021, it was announced that Milling-Smith would executive produce a documentary series entitled "Year Zero" alongside Kathryn Bigelow, Tim Pastore, and Greg Shapiro with Endeavor Content.[14]
SMUGGLER
editIn 2002, Milling-Smith and co-founder Brian Carmody started the production company, Smuggler.[15][16] In 2011, Milling-Smith received the Made in New York Award from Mayor Michael Bloomberg for SMUGGLER’s contributions to the city’s entertainment and media industries.[1][17][18][11]
In 2007, 2011, and 2015, the company won the Palme D'Or at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and won production company of the year by advertising magazine AdAge in 2017 and 2020.[19][20][21] Smuggler won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Commercial in both 2017 and 2020.
