High Commissioner to Canada
editSanjay Kumar Verma was appointed as India’s High Commissioner to Canada in September 2022. In this role, Verma is responsible for managing and strengthening India-Canada relations, which include overseeing diplomatic, trade, and cultural exchanges between the two countries.
Sanjay Kumar Verma, India's High Commissioner to Canada, has played a key role in the escalating diplomatic tensions between the two countries. This began when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged Indian involvement in the assassination of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. India strongly denied the accusations, which led to a series of diplomatic retaliations, including the expulsion of Canadian diplomats from India and a suspension of visa services for Canadians.
Verma confirmed in interviews that the expulsion of 41 Canadian diplomats was a response to the removal of an Indian diplomat by Canada. He characterized India's actions as partly driven by emotional factors following Ottawa's public accusations, but also pointed to the disparity in the size of the two countries' diplomatic missions as a justification for the move. Despite the severity of the situation, Verma indicated that "constructive" talks have continued between India and Canada, though relations remain strained over the Khalistan issue and Nijjar's killing.
