Submission declined on 29 November 2024 by Sungodtemple (talk). This submission is not adequately supported by reliable sources. Reliable sources are required so that information can be verified. If you need help with referencing, please see Referencing for beginners and Citing sources. This submission appears to read more like an advertisement than an entry in an encyclopedia. Encyclopedia articles need to be written from a neutral point of view, and should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources, not just to materials produced by the creator of the subject being discussed. This is important so that the article can meet Wikipedia's verifiability policy and the notability of the subject can be established. If you still feel that this subject is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, please rewrite your submission to comply with these policies. Declined by Sungodtemple 7 days ago. |

The Faculty of Mathematics and Statistics (FME, by its Catalan acronym) at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) is, as its name suggests, the institution responsible for teaching and research in the fields of mathematics and statistics at this university.
The FME is located beneath Barcelona's Avinguda Diagonal, where, together with other schools and faculties, it constitutes the South Campus (Campus Sud) of the UPC. Situated in the area known as Zona Universitària, this vibrant academic hub is home to numerous educational institutions and research centers, making it one of the most intellectually dynamic areas in Barcelona.
Regarding its academic programs, the FME offers bachelor's degrees in Mathematics and Statistic, the latter in collaboration with the University of Barcelona's Faculty of Economics and Business. Additionally, it provides two master's programs: the Master's in Statistics and Operations Research (MESIO) and the Master's in Advanced Mathematics and Mathematical Engineering (MAMME), as well as an extensive doctoral and research program.
History
editFounded in the Olympic year of 1992, the origins of the FME can be traced back to a letter from President Jordi Pujol to the then-rector of the UPC, Professor Gabriel Ferraté, dated April 11, 1987:
Ferraté, I am aware that Hewlett-Packard has complained about the lack of "business mathematicians." What is a business mathematician? Is it a serious issue that we don’t have them? Should we create such a program? Can we make it happen? Sincerely, Jordi Pujol.
The president’s concern even reached the Parliament of Catalonia and aligned with the needs and vision of the university itself. Professor Jaume Pagès, who at the time was Vice Rector for Academic Affairs at the UPC, took charge of driving and shaping the project. This effort came to fruition in October 1992 with the launch of both the Mathematics and the Statistics Degree. Over time, the program expanded to include the Degree in Statistical Sciences and Techniques, as well as the dual-degree program combining a Telecommunications Engineering Degree and the Mathematics Degree (then known as "Teleco-mates"), a precursor to the current Centre for Advanced Interdisciplinary Training program (CFIS).
List of all the school's deans
editIn total, the list of all the deans of the school since its foundation is as follows:
Joan Solá-Morales Rubio (1992 - 1997), Pere Pascual Gainza (1997 - 2003), Sebastià Xambó Descamps (2003 - 2009), Jordi Quer Bosor (2009 - 2015), Jaume Franch (2015 - 2023), Jordi Guàrdia Rúbies (2023 -).
