The Twenty-Sided Tavern

The Twenty-Sided Tavern, officially Dungeons & Dragons The Twenty-Sided Tavern[1], is an interactive, live-action roleplaying experience in the style of Dungeons & Dragons, created and conceived by David Andrew Laws, Sarah Davis Reynolds, and David Carpenter[2]. It utilizes modified gameplay mechanics from tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) such as dice rolling and simulated combat alongside improv comedy and audience-driven technology Gamiotics to facilitate in-seat interactive entertainment.

Overview

edit

Premise

edit

The Twenty-Sided Tavern is the venue where people gather to tell and retell stories set in a fantasy world. Though some story elements are set, much of the plot is revealed by audience choice, random dice rolls, or improvised parts. Because of these elements, no two stories told at The Twenty-Sided Tavern are ever the same.

Function

edit

Upon entering the venue, audiences scan a QR code to access the Gamiotics software. They are sorted into one of three Cohorts: The Fighters, The Mages, and The Rogues. Three of the five onstage performers represent the Players, each shepherding their Cohort through the various challenges. The other two performers are the Dungeon Master who controls the experience’s story aspects and the Tavern Keeper, who controls the game elements.[3]

The audience (Adventurers) is onboarded with the game’s mechanics (dice rolling, decision making, etc.) before diving into the fantasy world. The choices the Adventurers make are reflected by the actions and improv of the onstage performers. At the end of the quest, the outcome of the Adventurers’ various successes and failures determines which ending they receive.[4]

Currencies and games

edit

Interactivity at The Twenty-Sided Tavern is either analog or digital. Digital games played through Gamiotics are individual or group minigames like Multiclicks, Over/Unders, and Tug-of-Wars. Analog games are modifications of real life games such as Fantasy Beer Pong and Uh Oh! Block Fall down. Each module also uses a unique set of currencies including hit points, collected items, and numbers of successes achieved.[5]

Production history

edit

The Twenty-Sided Tavern was first performed as a part of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival in November 2019. It was promoted by friend of the show Neil Patrick Harris on Twitter who tweeted “Philly folks, time to roll for initiative! @TheTSTavern is a live-action #TTRPG that uses #Gamiotics to let YOU control the story. If you like D&D and interactive storytelling, pack your dice & check it out!”.

The production then moved to New York City, where it ran at Asylum NYC before its premiere production in Pittsburgh at the Pittsburgh CLO. While there, The Twenty-Sided Tavern was featured in Neil Patrick Harris’ weekly blog Wondercade, where he called co-creator DAGL “the reigning expert on turning the tables on tabletop gaming and bringing the role-playing experience to the stage”[9].

The Twenty-Sided Tavern returned to New York City at the Daryl Roth Theatre in 2021, then transferred to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

In 2022, The Twenty-Sided Tavern appeared at Broadway in Chicago for a three-month run.[10]

On May 5, 2024, The Twenty-Sided Tavern announced their intention to re-open at Stage 42.[11][12][13]

The show is scheduled to go on tour in Spring 2025.[14]

Notable Adventurers

edit

Notable Adventurers to attend The Twenty-Sided Tavern have included Alex Horne (Taskmaster), Jack Packard (Red Letter Media), and Heidi Gygax, daughter of Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax.
