Workshop on Matrices and Operators (MAO) is a workshop series on matrix theory, operator theory, and related topics which began in 2007. These include:
- Numerical linear algebra
- Multilinear Algebra
- Numerical Range and its Generalizations
- Combinatorial Matrix Theory
- Spectral Graph Theory
- Operator Algebra
- Lie Group and Lie Algebra
- Quantum Information Theory
The purpose of the workshop is to promote research and collaboration among researchers with an interest in the fields.[1][2][3] Participants are encouraged to present their latest findings and discoveries, and share their experiences and research problems, fostering an atmosphere of collaboration and mutual learning. Through dialogue and knowledge exchange, the workshop aims to enhance the collective growth and development of the research community involved in matrix theory, operator theory, operator algebras, and related fields. Hopefully, the informal workshop atmosphere will ensure the exchange of ideas from different research areas.
History
editThe workshop series began when a couples of matrix and operator theory researchers met at Hong Kong in 2007, and exchanged their research results, problems, and ideas informally. It grew out as an annual event with the same original purpose.
The workshop began in Hong Kong, with its first meetings held from 2007 to 2008 at the University of Hong Kong, before moving to National Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan in 2009. From 2010 to 2015 [4] [5] [6] [7], the workshop established a consistent presence in China, where it was hosted annually, and it returned there again from 2017 to 2019 [8][9]. The workshop was hosted in Jeju Island, Korea in 2016 [10].
The workshop faced a temporary halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic but resumed in 2024, marking its expansion to a broader international stage. That year, the event was hosted at the University of Nevada, Reno[11][12][13] in the United States . Future meetings are planned in Canada in 2025 and India in 2026 [14], reflecting the workshop’s growing global reach and influence.
