Burgundian Circle / Vassal state of the Republic

edit

The version pulled from Dutch Wikipedia says that the county was part of the Burgundian Circle, and so presumably, in one of the 17 provinces. The 1548 date strongly suggests that this was part of the Burgundian treaty of 1548 in some way, but the original article doesn't specify how, and doesn't source it. It does appear to be the case though: historical maps of the Burgundian circle (including this one from the late 16th century) include Culemborg as part of "Geldria", evidently the Latin name of the Duchy of Guelders, which is certainly one of the 17. And this paper discussing the eventual sale of the county in 1720 makes some mention of the fact that Culemborg was part of the circle on page 5, but only in passing and with no extra detail, as far as I can tell.

I am also curious about what happened in 1588 to make the county into a "vassal" of the Republic. As with the Burgundian Circle, the original Dutch WP article notes this in the infobox but doesn't elaborate in the article body, and has no sources.Eniagrom (talk) 10:03, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Currency?

edit

Found this picture on Commons, which is tentatively associated with Culemborg in the 16th century:

Could be interesting to include something about the currency used in Culemborg, particularly since its reputation was as a place people went to flee their debtors. This particular coin is not definitively attributed to Culemborg, the museum in Rotterdam (where the picture originates) lists it as "possibly from Culemborg". But given how messy currencies were in the HRE, it could be interesting to know how currency worked in Culemborg, what its fixed conversion was to other HRE currencies, etc. Eniagrom (talk) 04:20, 30 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
