Federal Disability Term Alternative Term Description
Specific Learning Disability SLD A disorder related to processing information that leads to difficulties in reading, writing, and computing; the most common disability, accounting for half of all students receiving special education
Autism ASD A spectrum disorder including criteria that specifies impairments with social interaction and communication. This also includes patterns of behaviors that are characterized as restricted, repetitive, and even stereotyped. Characteristics include withdrawn behaviors, anxious behaviors, depression, and/or severe problems with mood of feelings of self-worth.
Deaf-blindness This is a combination of vision and hearing loss or impairment. The criteria for hearing impairment, visual impairment, and dead blindness are consistent.
Emotional Disturbance ED A disorder related to serious problems that are present for over a long period of time (usualy 6 months) that is rated by scales and observation.
Hearing Impairment A disorder related to serious problems that are present for over a long period of time (usualy 6 months) that is rated by scales and observation.
Intellectual Diability A disability characterized by sub average intellectual and adaptive functioning. There are three states including mild, moderate, and severe intellectual disabilities.
Multiple Disabilities A combination of disabilities that differ with the level of severity, which causes impairments resulting in severe educational needs, movement, and even hearing or vision.
Othorpedic Impairment This is any condition or damage to the musculoskeletal system including ligaments, joints, bones, tendons, and muscles. This impairment is caused by congenital anomalies, disease, or other causes.
Other Health Impairment OHI This disability includes chronic or acute health problems that results in limited strength, vitality, and limited or heightened alertness to the surrounding environment.
Speech or language impairment SLI Several types of communication disorders that affect different aspects of language including fluency, voice, language, and articulation.
Traumatic Brain Injury TBI An injury that affects the brain functioning. This can be a major cause of death and disability in the US. Brain dysfunction caused by an outside force usually to the head.
Visual Impairment Low-incidence disabilities Defined by visual acuity and visual field describing any kind of vision loss not just blindness. Criteria varies between visual impairment and visual field.
Developmental Delay DD A significant delay in one or more areas including physical/motor, cognitive,

communication, social/emotional, or adaptive development. This requires special education and related services affecting the educational performance of a student. The progression of the student is slow, stops, or reverses.|-

Deafness This condition happens when a person cannot understand speech through their hearing, even when sound is amplified. Profound deafness is

complete total lack of hearing, which makes a person not able to detect sound at all.
