"Outline" is short for "hierarchical outline", which is a type of tree structure and list. There are two types of outlines: sentence outlines and topic outlines; on Wikipedia (WP) we have topic outlines, though their listed topics may each be annotated with a sentence or two describing them.
Another name for outlines is "structured lists", and in the case of Wikipedia outlines: "structured topics lists". Structure (levels) in WP outlines are represented through the use of headings and indenting the list items.
Since topics on WP correspond with articles, outlines on WP serve as site maps for its subjects. These navigation aids can help you find your way around areas of knowledge on WP, even when you are not sure what you are looking for.
Together, the outlines form a subject classification system, to help organize knowledge into related areas. Because of this, they are one of WP's Contents systems.
