Durganagar is a locality in North Dumdum of North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It was named after the goddess Durga. It is a part of area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). Durganagar is about 6.2 km from Dakshineswar Kali Temple and 1 km west of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata.[1]

Geography

Durganagar (West) has been a part of the North Dum Dum Municipality since 2000 and Durganagar (East) belongs to the Dum Dum Municipality.[2][3] Previously it was known as Sultanpur. Durganagar area is situated in the Northern Suburbs of the Kolkata Metropolitan Area.

Police station

Nimta and Dum Dum police stations under the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate have jurisdiction over North Dumdum and Dum Dum Municipal areas respectively.[4][5]

Durganagar has good transportation facilities. Belghoria Expressway[7] (locally known as Delhi Road) passes through Durganagar. The locality is very close to the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.

Durganagar railway station on the Sealdah-Bangaon line is the nearest railway station.[8]

Bhaskar Ganguly

Bhaskar Ganguly is a former Indian football goalkeeper from Durganagar, West Bengal.[15] He was the captain of India national football team which participated in the 1982 Asian Games held in New Delhi.[16]

Notable People

  • Dipankar Ganguly: The famous English tutor (familiar as Dilip Ganguly) who taught since 40 years. Despite having profound knowledge in literature, science, arts, commerce etc, he was also a great human being and cordial to his student. Besides teaching passionately he chose his profession as the manager of the Central Bank of India. He left us forever at the age of 71 years old, 18th April, 2021.
