A.K.M. Fazlul Kabir Chowdhury was a Prominent Bangladeshi politician and a well respected Businessman. He served as a member of parliament as well as Leader of the Opposition in East Pakistan Provincial Assembly.[1]

Early life

Mr Chowdhury was born in Raozan Upazila, Chittagong.[2] Mr Chowdhury completed his graduation and master's degree from University of Calcutta.

Career

Mr Chowdhury was the leader of the opposition in the East Pakistan Provincial Assembly. He was the chairman of the legislative committee in the assembly.[3] He served as the founder President of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and industry. He served as governor of Marine and Mercantile Academy. He established the Raozan College.[4] He established island of peace in Raozan and in the opening he invited Mr Dominique Pire (Nobel Peace prize 1958) from Belgium.

[3] He had served in the Chittagong District Council.[3] He was the vice-chairman and later Chairman of Chittagong Port Trust.[3] Mr Chowdhury has made commendable changes for the people of Bangladesh especially for the people of Chittagong

Personal life

Mr Chowdhry's eldest son A.B.M. Fazle Karim Chowdhury is a member of Bangladesh Parliament who has won for 5 consecutive terms and he is currently serving as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Railways.[5] Mr Chowdhury's youngest son A.B.M. Fazle Shahid Chowdhury is a well renowned businessman, He is the Chairman of New Era Fashion MFRS (BD) Limited and he is also one of the founder and the CEO of Fazle enterprise.[6] One of Mr Chowdhury’s daughter in law Masuda M Rashid Chowdhury also served as a member of Parliament in Bangladesh. Mr Chowdhury's brother is A.K.M Fazlul Quader Chowdhury who was a member of parliament, served as a speaker and also as an Acting President of the country and his brothers-side nephew is Salauddin Quader Chowdhury who served as a member of parliament, as a minister and as an adviser to the prime minister. Mr Chowdhury’s sisters-side nephew is Saber Hossain Chowdhury who is a member of parliament, currently serving as Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change. He also served as the president of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) .[7] Mr Chowdhury’s cousin is Fazlur Rahman who was the First education minister of the country, he also served as the Chief whip and later a Revenue Minster and his son is Salman Fazlur Rahman who served as the private industry and investment adviser to the Prime Minister. Except these prominent figures Mr Chowdhury’s family also has numerous other political figures, Government officials and Businessmen who has contributed in the development of Bangladesh

Death

Chowdhury died on September 9, 1972, in Dhaka.[5] After his death he was flown back to Chittagong using a chartered flight provided by the government of Father of the nation BongoBondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Mr Chowdhury was awarded state Funeral and was buried in his family graveyard at Box Ali Chowdhury Bari, Raozan.
