Description"Age" (1892) William Goscombe John (1860 - 1952) (29 365) (12210050323).jpg
The Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight.
The Subject is Clara Weiss of Neuchatel, Switzerland. She and hertwo daughters lived close to John's studio in London in 1887 - 8. He married one of them, Muriel, in Paris in 1890. Here he has modelled his aged mother in law both with dispassionate realism and with deep sensitivity; the head has the liveliness and immediacy of the best late 18th century French portraits, revealing John's enormous natural, if eclectic talent as a modeller. The plaster head has a coating of linseed oil to give it a lively colour and texture.
