Object history | Part of a series of studies made by Alma-Tadema in 1857-1858, while he was living and studying in Antwerp under Professor Louis Jan de Taeye (1822-1890). The drawing relates to a series of Egyptian pictures Alma-Tadema planned in around 1857-8 for 'The Contrary Oracle' and 'Going to the Oracle'. No pictures of these titles are known, but as well as the present drawing, a sketchbook was saved and separate leaves were periodically taken from it, and have appeared on the market. The present drawing was signed and inscribed by the artist’s daughter, Anna Alma-Tadema, and was in the collection of the English poet, author and critic Sir Edmund William Gosse, the artist’s brother-in-law, from whose family it was acquired by the family of a subsequent owner in the 1920's or 1930's. The drawing was then sold by Christie's in 2015, and later by an Art Gallery in London to the present owner. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
