Summary

Description

八仙山森林遊樂區 Basianshan National Forest Recreation Area

English: The railway started at Fengyuan Station on the Western Trunk Line, with the 13-km flat section running from Fengyuan to Tuniu. The 45-km cart-track (cart) ran from Tuniu to Jiabaotai. The three sections of the incline railway from Jiabaotai were 2 kilometres long and had an elevation drop of 1,009 metres. As there were many excavations, dikes, and bridges along the way, the overall scale of the project was immense. The maintenance difficulty was increased on the steep slopes, and on such large incline railway systems were ever constructed after. In 1938, the focus of the forest tree farms was shifted to the "new" Basianshan, the site around today's Mount Malun to Mount Baigu, and the transport method was changed to an aerial cableway and a railway connection. The upper section of the railway line along the Shiwen River is over 2,800 metres above sea level, making it the highest railway line in Taiwan.
