Summary

Description
English: Under restoration, BR Diagram 1/108 unfitted, all-steel, welded, 16 ton mineral wagon No.B577004 (later Internal User No.042207), built by Pressed Steel (Linwood) in 1957, Lot 2922 (later TOPS Code ZHV when in departmental use). The standard BR 16 tonner was built in huge numbers by a very large number of manufacturers in a variety of diagrams (with detail differences but main difference was between welded – the vast majority - or riveted bodies): 2,800 Diag. 1/106 built in 1950-51; 206,444 Diag.1/108 in 1950-59; 15,982 Diag. 1/109 (riveted) in 1950-59; 4,400 Diag. 1/111 in 1950-53; 300 Diag. 1/114 (intended to be fitted but most not) 1951; 100 Diag. 1/116 (riveted aluminium body) in 1953; 8,250 Diag. 1/117 (some fitted) in 1954-57 making a grand total of 238,276! Quickly outdated in the 1960’s, all were withdrawn by 1979 except for several thousand transferred to departmental use (some internal use only) and given TOPS Code ZHO (unfitted) or, mostly, ZHV (fitted). As they were often used to carry heavy stone ballast, rectangular holes were cut mid-way up one side of the body to prevent overfilling (as shown). The last was not withdrawn until 1999. At the Somerset & Dorset Railway Gala, Midsomer Norton, Somerset 4 July 2021.
