Description1918 - First Birmingham Police Female Uniform (8370800384).jpg
During the early part of the 20th century, traditions began to change. This led to women being able to join the police force for the first time in 1918.
To be one of the first female police officers in the city, and to wear this long skirt, jacket and tie combination, women had to be over 45 years of age!
At this time in history, women officers also received no personal protective equipment and did not have any powers of arrest.
Female officers gained the powers of arrest in 1933. Today, we have female officers working in key roles across the force including command teams, the dogs unit, firearms and our response teams.
