The Tiananmen, the “Gate of Heavenly Peace” which leads to the Forbidden City, forms the northern boundary of Tiananmen Square. The gate was built in the 15th century and restored in the 17th century. On October 1, 1949, Mao Zedong proclaimed the People’s Republic of China here.
Tiananmen Square was originally designed and built in 1651. Starting in 1954, it was greatly expanded and altered such that today it can accommodate 600,000 people. The square is largely open with just a few trees and no benches.
