Capernaum is referred to as the Town of Jesus because a number of his disciples came from here and he used it as the center of his ministry. These ruins are what is left of one of the oldest synagogues in the world, dating from the 4th or 5th centuries CE. Beneath the foundation is another foundation which might be for the synagogue in which Jesus preached here.
