Summary
| Description | 330-PSA-179-62 (USN 711100): Secretary of the Navy Fred Korth, (left), pins the Distinguished Flying Cross on the Navy’s X-15 pilot, Commander Forest S. Petersen, USN, (center). Looking on is Vice Admiral Robert B. Pirie, USN, (right), Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Air. A citation accompanying the award reads in part: “For extraordinary achievement in aerial flight during the period September 1960 to January 1962. As a pilot of the X-15 research aircraft on five separate flights, Commander Petersen contributed materially in the obtaining valuable information to be used in the design and operation of future aerospace vehicles.” The presentation was made July 19, 1962, at the Pentagon.
