"The charkah of Gandi fame" Photograph of two women sitting at a spinning wheel or charkha. The charkah is used as both a tool and a symbol of the Indian independence movement. Mahatma Gandhi used the symbol of the charkha in his teachings. He hoped that it would assist the people of India to achieve self-sufficiency and independence.; This belongs to a series of Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Committee lantern slides relating to Jammu City, which is also known as the "City of Temples". A mission station occupied by Church of Scotland missionaries was founded here in the late 19th/early 20th century.
