DescriptionA bronze ewer from the fourteenth century found on Gower, Wales.jpg
English: A bronze ewer from the 14th century found on Gower. It was probably used during banquets for guests to wash their hands between courses, before the invention of forks. It is inscribed in Lombardic capitals with the following words:
JE SU LAWR DE GILBERT. KI MEMBERA MAL J DEDERT.
(translated: I AM THE EWER OF GILBERT, HE WHO CARRIES ME OFF MAY SUFFER EVIL)
The ewer may have belonged to Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester and Lord of Glamorgan.
