GeneralHalleck, however, objected to the abandon-ment of the Heights, notwithstanding Hook-ers representations that the position wasutterly useless for any purpose; whereuponHooker abandoned his project, and findingnow that he was not allowed to manoeuvrehis own army in the presence of the enemy,asked to be relieved from his command. Penn-sylvania Bucktails (Doubledaysdivision), its right resting on theChambersburg pike (the left of the picture) and its left on the had beset a predecessor whom he had himselfmercilessly criticised, and promptly succumbedto them. His request was complied with, andMajor-General George G. Meade was ap-pointed his successor, this being the fifthchange of commanders of the Army of thePotomac in ten months. General Meade wasan excellent officer of long service, who hadalways proved equal to his position, whetheras a specialist or a commander of troops.Many welcomed his advent—some regrettedHooker.
