English: The Sawa Lake, in the southern province of Muthanna in Iraq, has now completely dried up, after a second consecutive year of severe drought in the country. In fact, the rising temperatures, together with a drastic decrease in water levels of the Tigris and Euphrates, have caused extreme droughts across the county. According to a spokesperson of the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources, the Sawa Lake has now completely dried up for the first time in Iraq’s history.
The dramatic change is shown in these images, acquired by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 19 April 2017 and 18 April 2022. It is evident that after only five years the water is now completely absent.
