Description
On Baie-Saint-Paul the distant viewing point enables the painter to create a composition similar to a landscape of La Malbaie by Robinson. The foreground occupies over half of the height of the canvas and consists of a mass of snow through which a crescent-shaped stream of water flows. This stream directs the gaze of the viewer to the center of the painting where horse-drawn sleds are shown sliding over the road that stretches the entire width of the canvas. The silhouette of the center of Baie-Saint-Paul forms an architectural frieze unified by the color tones used to render the shades of brick walls. Unlike the view of La Malbaie, the orientation, the nature and the size of the buildings are much more heterogeneous.
