Original file(440 × 624 pixels, file size: 144 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

Description Captain Alexander Leslie-Melville (1831-1857), of the Grenadier Guards. Eldest son of the 8th Earl of Leven, died only a couple of years after returning to Britain. At the time, his death was attributed to the hardships of the war. In a make-shift studio he looks unkempt and shaken, as if he has recently stepped off the battlefield. In recent years, this photograph has been described as the first photographic portrait of shell-shock. reference
