AWM Caption: Sydney, NSW. July 1942. Torpedo damage to the Australian merchant vessel SS Allara. The ship was proceeding from Cairns to Sydney when struck under the port quarter by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine. The stern gun was blown overboard, the steering gear wrecked, four men were killed and six injured. Allara was towed to Newcastle and then to Sydney for repair.
