English: British Air Commodore Ashley Stevenson, cropped from 070731-F-3050V-127 U.K. Royal Air Force Air Commodore Ashley Stevenson (at podium) takes command of Kandahar AIrfield (KAF), Afghanistan from U.S. Army Col. Richard L. Stevens on Tuesday, July 31, 2007. Presiding over the historic change of command ceremony is Netherlands Maj. Gen. Freek Meulman. He is the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) deputy commander for air. The ceremony culminates a year long effort to bring KAF under NATO control. KAF encompasses 17 nations with over 10,000 military, civilian, and contract personnel represented. It has strategic importance in southern Afghanistan, and is the largest International Security and Assistance Force's (ISAF) operating base. KAF is headed by four lead stakeholder nations; the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and the Royal Netherlands. The nations primarily share responsibility for providing life support and maintenance of facilities and structures on the installation. Up until now, the U.S. military has run the base. The ceremony marked the first time NATO has taken full control of a large airfield and operational staging base in an active operational theater using a multi-national team.
