Summary

Description
English: Ath-kanda lihini / Warana

Among the menagerie of Mythical Sinhala or Asian beasts there is a great elephant headed raptorial bird known as the “Ath-kanda Lihiniya” sometimes also referred to as “Warana” A great bird is said to have hunted Elephants and towered like a cloud when in flight. Though very little stories of Ath kanda lihiniya survive in present Sinhala lore several graphic representations could be found among temple motifs.

The motif is common among regional cultures as the “Nok hasadee” in Thai lore and in some ways similar to the “Roc” of Middle Eastern legends.
