Summary

Description

Azara serrata

English: I didn't know these fruited interestingly until this happened a couple of years back. DNA analysis has shown that willows (Salix) and poplars (Populus) belong among the many mostly tropical plants usually included in a rather unfamiliar family - the Flacourtiaceae (which includes Azara). Unfortunately the willows and poplars (and hence the family they belong to - the Salicaceae) were named before the flacourtiaceae which means that much of that group (including Azara) is now classified in the salicaceae (The exceptions are mostly pretty obscure to temperate gardeners, but one - Berberidopsis, is a completely unrelated plant.)
