Note: An artist's rendering of the Battle of Kirksville, Missouri during the American Civil War depicts Union soldiers firing toward the Adair County courthouse (center) stretching in a line northeast from the town square. According to "History of Adair County" by E. M. Violette, published in 1911, the man depicted on horseback near the old Cumberland Academy to the right is Col. John McNeil, the commander of the Union forces during the battle. Allen Towne was a member of the faculty of the First District Normal School, 1906-1916.
