Originally built by order of king Afonso III around 1250, on a site occupied at least since Roman times, the castle became the seat of the Cabral family (of which navigator Pedro Alvares Cabral was the most famous member) from 1398 to 1762. By the end of the 19th century it was a ruin, but has in recent years been revitalised as a tourist attraction.
