Description
An 1863 oil on canvas painting of men in a forest around a campfire, ostensibly inspired by a fifty-wagon train of German emigrants who crossed Bierstadt's path during his 1863 expedition. According to the Mead Art Museum, this painting is dark. The painting differs greatly from its brighter, moonlit version. (Uploader's original research: when brightened, the wagon is missing the phrase "For Oregon" that appears in other versions of the painting.)
