DescriptionChester - iron roving bridge on the Shropshire Union Canal - geograph.org.uk - 794183.jpg
English: Chester - iron roving bridge on the Shropshire Union Canal Chester. Iron roving bridge (bridge 126) at Tower Wharf by the graving dock on the Shropshire Union Canal (Ellesmere branch). A roving (or turnover) bridge is designed to allow the towing horse to cross the canal without unhitching the tow rope from the boat - for example, as here, by using a spiral ramp. The bridge is part of the North Cheshire Way (Chester branch). The canal basin on the far side was being pumped out at the time of the picture.
