Description
English: SS City of Paris
  • oil on canvas
  • 81.2 x 152.4 cm
  • signed b.r.: A. Jacobsen. 1889 / 705 Palisade Av, West Hoboken. NY

This vessel was built by J. & G. Thomson of Cydebank for the Inman Line and entered service in 1889 as the City of Paris. She was a fast vessel and held the Blue Riband in 1891 and in 1892-93. In 1893 she came under American flag as part of the American Line. In the Spanish-American war she served as U.S.S. Yale (1898-99). After resuming service on the Atlantic, she ran aground near Cornwall in 1899 and was later taken to Belfast to be rebuilt. With two funnels instead of three, she was back in service in 1901, now as the Philadelphia. In 1918-19 she served again with the U.S. Navy, as the U.S.S. Harrisburg. Served again on the Atlantic 1919-20, and was sold in 1922 and scrapped in 1923. Jacobsen also painted her as the Philadelphia in 1902. See "Other versions".
