Description
Procession of the Civic Guard on Dam Square. This painting is the oldest known picture giving a view of Dam Square. Probably the dramatic figures of the marching guardsmen were the inspiration for this painting. We are looking across the square in a northwesterly direction, from the south side of the Dam. We see the old town hall with its saddle roof, surmounted by a bell tower. This had replaced a decrepit spire that was dismantled in 1615. The procession moves along the town hall and beyond the Weighhouse. The artist has adopted a high point of view in order to show the route of the guardsmen as fully as possible. This results in the figures of the militiamen and surging crowds being reduced as they recede into the background.
