Peten was co-owner of a successful and prize-winning horse breeding farm 'Fallas en Peten'. The CPSAL acronym refers to sports and athletics. The caricature shows Peten in the context of horses, with Peten-Van-Halen Castle in the background.
This watercolor is part of a collection of caricatures about prominent members of the Comité provincial de Secours et d'Alimantation du Limbourg (CPSAL), which coordinated food supplies in Limburg during the First World War. The CPSAL was a provincial division of the CNSA (Comité National de Secours et d'Alimentation) which, with the approval of the German authorities, was responsible for the supply of the Belgian population. The CNSA was dependent on goods supplied by the Commission for Relief of Belgium (CRB), which was supervised by neutral powers (USA until 1917 and afterwards the Netherlands and Spain).
