The range of this tiny desert annual extends from the southern Great Basin and northern Mojave Desert in eastern California, eastward to western Colorado and New Mexico, often on carbonate or calcareous substrates below about 2500 meters (8200 feet) elevation.
Distinctive aspects of this inconspicuous species include small white (lavender-streaked) flowers with tube included in calyx and short throat with yellow spots at base, anthers and style shortly exserted, fruiting calyx papery with triangular red lobes, and with stalk inflated and white just below calyx.
