English: Gladstone Coal Berth Deepening
To enable bigger ships to load Callide coal, silt is now being dredged from the Gladstone coal berth.
The depth aimed at in 26 ft, which would be ample for the 7000-ton British freighter Itria, the first of the bigger ships which will load for Hong Kong next week.
If the Itria's loading is successful, it is expected that 9000-ton Commonwealth-owned river ships will be used on the Gladstone-Melbourne coal run.
The Gladstone Harbour Board is installing a. £100,000 coal loading plant to speed loading operations.
